一般に空軍パイロットを指すが、原作では「飛行機野郎」と訳されていて―

 

 

As this sort of talk began to circulate,people at Edwards began to beam up the radar… For months the word within NASA had been that the X-15 project would be the last hurrah for "the flyboys." Now that was all changing. No one was saying it publicly yet,but the unthinkable was now possible: for the first time, Project Mercury itself was regarded as expendable.

The supersonic transports and airliners would be so automated they would give the pilot an override stick just so he could push on it every now and then and feel like a pilot; it would be a goddamned right-stuff security blanket. They were even developing an automatic guidance system to bring the X-15 back through the atmosphere at a precise angle of attack. Maybe the age of "the flyboys," the stick'n'rudder fighter jocks, was about finished.

 

超音速の輸送機や定期航空機では自動化が大いに進み、パイロットは自動化を解除する仕掛けを与えられ、ときどきそのボタンをおせばパイロット気分にひたれる。つまり、正しい資質のせめてものよりどころというわけだ。Ⅹ15 を寸分たがわぬ角度で大気圏内につれもどす自動誘導装置すら開発途上にある。「飛行機野郎」の時代、操縦桿を操作する戦闘機乗りの時代は、ほぼ終りを告げたと言っていいだろう。[中公文庫]

 

 

連絡官（デヴィッド・クレノン）が "No bucks, no BuckRogers." と講釈するシーンで、イェーガー（サム・シェパード）を "Flyboy, let's dance." と誘うグレニス（バーバラ・ハーシィ）、そして二人が踊る曲は―

この fly-boy は「飛行機野郎」なんて（ガサツな）雰囲気じゃなく、"Cowboy, let's dance." と置き換えても何の違和感のない、まさに cowboy／ flyboy としてのイェーガーをイメージさせるセリフになっている。
