グレニスが X-1 で飛ぶイェーガーに―

と、やはり取って付けたようなフレーズを言うことに絡めて、その154～163で「sound barrier 気まぐれ集中講義」のテーマにして拘った―
If there is any beyond.
の原文は―
The idea in testing the X-1 was to nurse it carefully into the transonic zone, up to seven-tenths, eight-tenths,nine-tenths the speed of sound (.7 Mach,.8 Mach,.9 Mach) before attempting the speed of sound itself, Mach 1, even though Bell and the Army already knew the X-1 had the rocket power to go to Mach 1 and beyond, if there was any beyond.（The Right Stuff）X 1 のテストのねらいはマッハ〇・七、〇・八、〇・九と機をだましだまし音速に近いスピードにあげていって、最後に音速そのもの、つまりマッハ一に挑戦するということにあった。ベル飛行機会社にも陸軍にも、X 1 のロケットはマッハ一、いやそれ以上のスピードがあるとすればそこまで出せるだけの力があることはわかっていた。[中公文庫]
留意すべきは、ここでは単に―
「それ以上のスピードがあるとすれば」
という別にギャグでも何でもない（go to Mach 1 and beyond に但し書きされた）普通の文章になっている点ですね。

はからずも、わたしが思っていた―
If there is any beyond は「以上があれば」でいいんじゃないでしょうか
と原文（原意）は一致していて、そのシーンの脳内字幕―
「（X-1 で）マッハ 1 以上を出せる」 「以上があればの話だが」 （We think the X-1's got the answer to go beyond Mach 1. If there is any beyond.）
は原文―
X-1 had the rocket power to go to Mach 1and beyond, if there was any beyond. （X 1 のロケットはマッハ一、いやそれ以上のスピードがあるとすればそこまで出せる）
の訳に（原意にはない「ライトスタッフ」式ギャグが混入してしまうけれど）なりうる。
つまり、映画は原作の―
Bell and the Army already knew the X-1 had the rocket power to go to Mach 1 and beyond, if there was any beyond.（ベル飛行機会社にも陸軍にも、X 1 のロケットはマッハ一、いやそれ以上のスピードがあるとすればそこまで出せるだけの力があることはわかっていた）
というクダリを、殆んど（少佐がイェーガーに話を持っていく形で）そのままのシーンにして見せてるのみならず、末尾の一言 if there was any beyond に皮肉のスパイス（ギャグ風味）を少々きかせてアレンジしてるわけで、「ライトスタッフ」をコメディ仕立て（のつぎはぎ細工）にしていることの一端が窺えます。（わたしの脳内ライブラリーでは〈コメディ〉の棚に「ライトスタッフ」は置かれている）

と言うように、原作（原文）の例えば（ほんの一例として） How many would have gone to work, or stayed at work, on cutthroat Madison Avenue if there had been a 23 percent chance, nearly one chance in four, of dying from it？ を映画は トゥルーディのセリフ "I wondered how they would have felt... if every time their husband went in to make a deal... there was a one in four chance he wouldn't come out of that meeting." に変換せしめ（まさしく「ライトスタッフ」式に）つぎはぎに脚色しているわけで、そんな得手勝手な小細工（換骨奪胎）がトム・ウルフには面白いはずもなかろう。
