EXT – COOPER BACKYARD – DAY (1953)
GORDO’S OUT THE BACKYARD looking thru the flames of his barbeque, burning hot dogs, talking to Gus, and Deke.
INT – COOPER KITCHEN – DAY
Trudy turns from the window. BETTY GRISSOM and Marge are there with her.
The machine broke! (「
Every wife wanted to cry out : "Well,my God! The machine broke! What makes any of you think you would have come out of it any better!"
Deke, that's 62 men in the last 36 weeks. You know what that averages?
In 1952, when Bridgeman was flying at Edwards Air Force Base, sixty-two Air Force pilots died in the course of thirty-six weeks of training, an extraordinary rate of 1.7 per week.
How dog-eat-dog and cutthroat it was on Madison Avenue and places like that.
(How dog-eat-dog and cutthroat it was on Madison Avenue places like that. Cutthroat? I wondered how they would have felt... if each time their husband went in to make a deal... there was a one in four chance…
There was much fashionably brutish talk of what "dog-eat-dog" and "cutthroat" competition they found there; but in the rare instances when one of these young men died on the job,it was likely to be from choking on a chunk of Chateaubriand, while otherwise blissfully boiled, in an expense-account restaurant in Manhattan. How many would have gone to work, or stayed at work, on cutthroat Madison Avenue if there had been a 23 percent chance, nearly one chance in four, of dying from it?
