あそこはスクリプトどおりのシーンになっていて、テキサススタイルのバーベキューパーティから転換―

And Gus laughs, and Trudy laughs, and the bulbs pop the screen WHITE.
CUT TO: EXT EDWARDS AFB
AND OUT OF THE WHITENESS, THE DESERT GLARE. AND IN THAT DESERT GLARE AN INCREDIBLE FIGURE STANDS. He’s wearig a glistening silver space suit, and he carries a gleaming helmet. The sunlight halos his head:

Ridley !
REDLEY
Yeah ?
FIGURE
You got any Beemans ?
Ridley’s eyes light up. He’s been waiting for this day, for those words again, for ten years.
REDLEY
Yeah. Matter of fact, I think I got me a stick.
FIGURE
Loan it to me, will ye ? Pay you back later.
REDLEY
Fair nuff.
FIGURE
I think I see a new plane over there with my name on it.
Overjoyed, Ridley throws his wrench back over his shoulder and runs into the sun after the spaceman walking toward the new plane.
INT CONTROL TOWER. EDWARDS.
TWO CONTROLLERS, half-drowsing, suddenly notice a PLANE taxiing down the runway.
FIRST CONTROLLER
Hey, what’s that ? Anyone got clearance ?
SECOND CONTROLLER
What kind of plane is that ? (into communication.. appropriate comm. Inquiries). Do you have clearance ?
YEAGER’S VOICE
Ah’m just takin her up to wring her out, boys. Any objections ?
YEAGER ROLLS BY ON THE RUNWAY AND TAKES OFF.
FIRST CONTROLLER
It’s Yeager ! No sir, no objections. All clear. He must have clearance, right ?
SECOND CONTROLLER
Sure, he must.
NF-104 へ向かうイェーガーの後を追うところが―

となっていることに注目されたし。
イェーガーはスペーススーツ姿（a glistening silver space suit）だから the spaceman なのだろうけども、なぜ普通に astronaut としてないのか―
と言うか、spaceman にピンとくる諸兄もありましょうが、カウフマンはスクリプトでも（自身へのギャグみたいに）ふざけてるんですよ、たぶん。
このイェーガーは spaceman（スペース・テストパイロット）であって、マーキュリー宇宙飛行士のような specimen ではない―カウフマンは（ゴールドマン脚本を蹴って―その3082参照）さぞや浮々楽しく（笑えるパロディとしての）スクリプトを書いたことでありましょうね。
フォン・ブラウンとアホのジョンソンの（笑える）やりとり―
ブ：こうなったら一刻も早い打ち上げを（Now we must get something up there quick and dirty, any way at all.）
ジ：何を上げる（Well, what ?）
ブ：何でもいい レッドストーンとアトラスを結合してポッドを（By combining our available rockets...the Redstone, the Atlas... I agree with those who say we could launch a pod.）
ジ：ポット？（A pot ?）
ブ：ポッド カプセルです これを自在に操るんです 砲弾のように上昇させて砲弾のように下降 落下傘で海上に着水させ中の被験者(スペシメン)を回収します（A POD. A capsule. Now, we will be in full control of this pod. It will go up like a cannonball, and come down like a cannonball...splashing down into the water, the ocean...with a parachute to spare the life of the specimen inside.）
ジ：宇宙人(スーペースメン)？（Spaceman ?）
ブ：被験者(スペシメン)です（SPE-CI-MEN.）
ジ：どんな被験者だね（Well, what kind of "spe-ci-men" ?）
ブ：タフで―指令を理解できるもの 例えばジンプ（A tough one. Responsive to orders. I had in mind a "jimp."）
ジ：ジンプ？ それは いったい何だ？（Jimp ? Well, what the hell is a jimp ?）
ブ：チンパンジーですよ サルです（A jimp. A chimpanzee, Senator. An ape.）

そこでなりふりかまわぬ拙速の方法に彼らはとびついた。レッドストーン（七万ポンド）や開発されたばかりのアトラス（三十六万七千ポンド）のような現有のロケットを使い、飛行機ではなく、豆のさやのような容器、つまりカプセルに人間を入れて打ち上げようというのだ。カプセルに入れられる人間はパイロットとはいえない。たんなる砲弾でしかない。カプセルの針路をわずかでも変えることはできないだろう。カプセルは砲弾のように打ち上げられ、砲弾のように落ち、海上に水しぶきをあげて着水する減速用パラシュートを使って、なかにいる人間モルモット（the human specimen）の生命を救うという違いはあっても。[中公文庫]
So a so-called quick and dirty approach was seized upon. Using available rockets such as the Redstone (70,000 pounds of thrust) and the just-developed Atlas (367,000 pounds), they would try to launch not a flying ship but a pod, a container, a capsule, with a man in it. The man would not be a pilot; he would be a human cannonball. He would not be able to alter the course of the capsule in the slightest. The capsule would go up like a cannonball and come down like a cannonball, splashing into the ocean, with a parachute to slow it down and spare the life of the human specimen inside.（The Right Stuff）
