クーパーは the best pilot についてパンチョの店の壁の写真を思い出し（I've seen a lot of them, and most of them were pictures on a wall...）―
Going up each day in a hurtling piece of machinery...putting their hides out on the line...hanging it out over the edge...pushing back the outside of that envelope and hauling it back.

As to just what this ineffable quality was…well, it obviously involved bravery. But it was not bravery in the simple sense of being willing to risk your life. The idea seemed to be that any fool could do that, if that was all that was required, just as any fool could throw away his life in the process. No, the idea here (in the all-enclosing fraternity)seemed to be that a man should have the ability to go up in a hurtling piece of machinery and put his hide on the line and then have the moxie, the reflexes,the experience, the coolness, to pull it back in the last yawning moment—and then to go up again the next day , and the next day, and every next day, even if the series should prove infinite—この言葉にしにくい資質というのは正確に言ってどういうものなのか…そこには勇気が含まれることは間違いない。しかしそれは自分の生命を喜んで危険にさらすといった態の単純な勇気とは違う。そのような勇気ならどんな馬鹿にでも発揮できる。もし要求されるのがそれだけだとすれば、命を投げ出すのはたやすい。外界から隔絶したフラタニティの世界において、それはどういうことかと言うと、機（マシン）を駆って疾風のごとく空に駈けのぼり、死の瀬戸際まで挑み、機が制御できなくなるぎりぎりのところで、闘魂と反射神経と経験と冷静さを総動員して、機を立て直し帰還する―それを翌日もその翌日も、たとえはてしなく続くとしても、毎日毎日続ける。 [中公文庫]

Any fool could do that (and many fools would no doubt volunteer, given the opportunity), just as any fool could throw his life away in the process. とあって、「ライトスタッフ」では 凸凹リクルータ・コンビがパンチョの店を訪れる際、なかにタムロする連中のことを―
凹 ： The world's best test pilots. They got some little brotherhood. They think they got the right stuff. 世界最高のパイロットだよ 仲間意識が強い "正しい資質（ライトスタッフ）"を持ってる
凸 ： You mean, heroism, bravery？ 正しい資質？ 勇気か
凹 ： There's more to it than bravery. 勇気とかヒロイズムを超えたものだ
凸 ： What do they say it means？ 彼らは何と？
凹 ： They don't say anything. They don't talkabout it. 彼らは説明などしない
と（ライトスタッフという曖昧な概念についての）やりとりをする。
