「ファースト・マン」でのエド・ホワイトの死―即ち、アポロ 1 の火災事故のシーンは（「人類、月に立つ」では単に管制室のディーク・スレイトンとステュ・ルーサのマイクに突然 Fire! We got a fire in the cockpit! ルーサが Did he say fire? と訊き、スレイトンが血相を変え、We got a bad fire! との叫び声が入るだけで CM 内は見せない）―
ホワイト ：Hey, we got a fire in the cockpit.
チャフィー：Hey, we got a bad fire! We're burning up in here!
と（あくまで推測して）描かれる。

「人類、月に立つ」（Part 2）でも詳しく描かれているが、アポロ 1 のカプセル（CM）の内部電源テスト中、あまりに交信状態が悪いのでガス・グリソムは―
"I can't hear a thing your saying. Jesus Christ... I said, how are we going to get to the moon if we can't talk between two or three buildings？"
と皮肉まじりに（capcom のスチュアート・ルーサに）ぼやいている。（しばらくして突然カプセルからロジャー・チャフィーの "Fire, I smell fire." エド・ホワイトかグリソムの "Fire in the cockpit." という声が聞こえ、チャフィーが "We've got a bad fire.... let's get out！ We're burning up！ Get us out of here！" と叫ぶ…）
このことをシラーは、まともにブロックハウスと交信できないなら（その時点で）ミッションを中止すべきだった（He should have scrubbed. ← scrub ＝ to cancel or postpone a space flight or part of a mission）にも拘らず、船長のグリソムはそうしなかった―つまり、イケイケ熱（"go" fever）にかかっていたと捉えている。
※ 交信状態が悪いこと自体は（スレイトンが「バックアップシステムに空き缶と糸を使ったらどうだ」We're gonna get a new backup system. I sent a guy out for a couple of empty soup cans and some string. A lot of string. と冗談を言うくらいに）さほど深刻に考えられてなかったフシもある。
