＞月に降りずに司令船から具に月面の観察をするので別メニューの訓練 とだけ触れておいたアル・ウォーデン（CMP）についても話は平行していて、宇宙飛行士を地質学者にするという本筋に沿い（サブ的な印象は否めないが）並列的に描かれる。
ウォーデンに付きっきりのマン・ツー・マン式レクチャーをするのはファルーク・エルバズ Farouk El-Baz、訓練において著しい進歩を見せるウォーデンにエルバズが感嘆して―
「これで僕が月に行くのと同じだ」（Oh, my friend. It will be as if I am going to the moon myself.）
と喜び握手する。
ウォーデンによると、エルバズは an interesting man であり brilliant man であり wonderful man であり Farouk and I developed a very special relationship. であり We're still good friends. であり He's still my mentor. であり I still look up to Farouk. ―実際 ウォーデンにとってエルバズはスコットにとってのシルバー教授と言え、それぞれの関係は（lunar orbit geology と surface geology との違い―軌道上と月面との距離にして 60 マイルの差こそあれ）見事に重なり合っている。（Johnson Space Center Oral History Alfred M. ウォーデンにとってエルバズの存在の大きさは、例えば実はエルバズが司令船エンデバー Endeavour の名付け親（少なくともクックの船名を推薦した）という事実からも容易に窺え、エルバズは Captain Cook の子供向け本をウォーデンに見せ（これがええんちゃう？とエジプト人訛りで）選ばせたらしい。

Farouk El-Baz came up with our command module name. We believed that our flight was the first truly scientific voyage to the moon, and this concept made Farouk excited to help us find some names. At Washington National Airport one day, he spotted a children’s picture book about great explorers in history. Farouk bought it and gave it to me, and I shared it with Dave and Jim. As we turned the pages, we came to Captain James Cook and his pioneering scientific exploration of the Pacific two hundred years earlier. His first voyage took place in the sailing vessel Endeavour — Farouk particularly liked that name.
