【誰にともなしに、独り言レス―その3247】
その 996～998
シルバー教授が「月はまだまだ謎だらけだ 月面には一体何が落ちてるのか」（Now, we really don't know what we're going to find on the lunar surface.）と語りかけると、すかさず（いささか酩酊気味の）ジム・アーウィンが―
「ピート・コンラッドのクルマの鍵」（Pete Conrad's car keys？）
と茶々を入れて一同大笑い（シュミットにポップコーンを投げつけられ）、エルバズが（「何でやねん」といった感じで）頭をはたく―そんな軽い突っ込みキャラだったかはともかく、エルバズの（巧みに宇宙飛行士を地質学者にする）優れたレクチャー能力は衆目の一致するところだった。
エルバズが軌道上からの月面観察についてスコット、アーウィン、ウォーデンの 3 人に（軌道上でウォーデンのやってることをスコット、アーウィンに説明するためにか）もちろん屋内でブリーフィングしてる画像があって、日付は 1971年 7月 7日。（アポロ15 のリフトオフは 7月26日）
その部屋はガラスの間仕切りでエルバズと 3 人のクルーを遮断していて、通常 ミッション間近 3 週間くらいは病気の感染を怖れて外部との接触を避けていた由。 （←それにしちゃ、打ち上げ数日前に狩りなんぞに出かけ、挙句に雨に当たって風邪をひいた剛の者もいるが…）
エルバズは月面について殆んど無知なウォーデンを（自分の脳の中と同じにすべく―"By the time you reach the lunar orbit, your brain should look much the same as mine."）みっちり仕込んでいく―Caterpillar sheds his skin to find a butterfly within～♪ と ドノヴァンの歌声を BGM に。（←つまり、言うに事欠いてイモ虫たる宇宙飛行士がチョウチョの地質学者に変身するというわけかいな？）
その成果を如実に示すかのようなウォーデンの月軌道からの第一印象（あちこちの記事で引用されている）―
After the King's [Farouk's nickname] training, I feel like I've been here before. （エルバズの訓練のおかげで前に来た気がするよ）
交信記録を見ると capcom（Henize : Roger, Al. Sounds like you're seeing a marvelous amount of detail up there.）に応えて正確には―
Worden ： Well, after - after the King's training, it's almost like I've been here before.

エルバズの綽名 "King" はウォーデンが（エジプトの王 King Farouk I に因んで）そう呼び始めたらしく、ウォーデンが（after the King's training と）感謝しているのは（King は King でも） Elvis ではく El-baz のことだ―なんてシャレた記事もあったりする。
ウォーデンとヘナイズのやりとりも（省略はあるが）ほぼ交信記録どおりで―
ウ ： オーケー、ヒューストン ツィオルコフスキー・クレーターの様子を言おうか
W ： Okay, Karl. If you're through with the news, let me give you some words on Tsiolkovsky.
ヘ ： いいね どうぞ
H ： Great, we're listening.
ウ ： まず中央だ 中央は山頂が大きくとび出していて、南と東の方向に分かれている 北側はどっしりした感じだ それから南と西をよく見ると断崖がいくつかの層に分かれているのが見える ―解るかなぁ？
W ： First off, the central peak. The central peak is - is a very large - spur peak on the - on the south and east sides, getting blocky on the north side; and there's what appears to be some layering visible on the - on the south and west exposed scarp of the peak （略）
ヘ ： ああ、よく聞こえているよ
H ： You're coming through loud and clear.
そして（ハリウッド式のロマンチックな演出で）バックルームでモニターしているエルバズが（ヘナイズの言葉を繰り返して）―
Loud and clear, my friend. （←吹き替えも「ああ、鮮やかに、くっきりと目に浮かぶよ」とロマンチックな意訳）
と、タバコをくゆらせ（あたかも自分自身が月面の観察をしている想いで）満足げに目を細めるのでありました…
即ち、宇宙飛行士が地質学者になると同時に（逆にと言うか、本当は）地質学者が宇宙飛行士になるのである―まさしくシルバー教授がスコットに「だが、もう行ったような気分だよ 君らのおかげで」（But I feel as if I've already been there, thanks to you.）と言ったように。（その3245参照）

エルバズは当時のことを―
So he really absorbed the whole thing, and for that, he became the best observer from orbit. He would look from the spacecraft all the way to the surface of the moon, and then he would pick up tiny little objects and differences in color, differences in texture, differences, and he would convey them right away, knowing that we were waiting for that.
と語り、ウォーデンに―
So I salute him.
と敬礼して見せ、膝を叩く。
