シェパードのアポロ14 には ＞シルバー教授はタッチしてなかった と書いたように、ご本人（Leon "Lee" Silver, Ph.D., Professor of Geology at the California Institute of Technology）の証言―
I did a little work with Apollo 14.
I only spent one day with the Apollo 14 team.
と（たった一日、付き合ってやっただけで）ツレナイもんです。
そのせいで（じゃなかろうけど）、シェパード（とミッチェル）は 2 日目の目標地点 コーン・クレーター Cone Crater の縁の目と鼻の先（20メートルほど）まで近づいていながら、それに気付かぬまま（結局 たどり着けずに）引き返している―つまり、シェパードらは自分達が今どこにいるか（その時だけでなく）確実には把握できてなかった。
この体たらくをシルバー教授は "They got lost" （彼らは道に迷った）と断（難）じていて、おかげで任務のいくつかを履行できなかった（they couldn’t tell where they were, and so they couldn’t implement some aspects of their mission.）と明かしている。
シェパードとミッチェルが最初に月面でゴルフ（とキャディー）をやったのは周知ではあるが、その前に実は最初（で最後）の月面迷子になってたのでありました。
巷間、シェパードとミッチェルが四苦八苦してコーン・クレーターの縁を捜し求め、あちこち右往左往した挙句、ついに（文字通り）息切れして引き返すことになった時、ミッチェルはシェパードに―
"Think you're finks." （裏切り者）
と言ったとされていて、例えば Wikipedia では―
"I think you're all finks." Edgar B. Mitchell. (said in response to Cmdr. Shepard's suggestion to turn back during their second EVA, where they came within 65 feet (21 m) of the rim of the 1,000 foot (300 m) wide Cone Crater that they were looking for)
日本語版（ウィキペディア）では―
"I think you're all finks."（君は全く裏切り者だな） Edgar B. Mitchell 第 2 回の船外活動で、コーン・クレーターの縁から 65フィート(21m)の地点まで来た時に、シェパード船長が引き返そうと言った時に答えた言葉
となっている。
けれど、交信記録によればミッチェルは capcom のフレッド・ヘイズとのやりとりで―
Mitchell ：（I）think you're finks！
と応えたのであって、この発言そのものは特にシェパードに対してではない（finks と複数になってるので少なくともシェパード一人に対してではない？）ような感じもするが…

H ： Okay, Al and Ed. In view of your assay of where your location is and how long it's going to take to get to Cone, the word from the Backroom is they'd like you to consider where you are the edge of Cone Crater.

H ： Okay. That decision, I guess, was based on Al's estimate of another, at least, 30 minutes and, of course, we cannot see that from here. It's kind of your judgment on that.
確かにミッチェルはタイムオーバーを気にして断念しようとするシェパードに反対していたにしても、ヘイズがバックルームの意向を伝え、それに応えて "think you're finks." と言ったのだから、そのままバックルームとヘイズに対してととるのが（シェパードを含むにせよ）素直で分かりやすいかと。

その時のミッチェルは引き返すのが不本意この上なく（It's terribly frustrating.）、迷子になったとも（LM が見えていて戻れると言い張って）認めていないが（There's no feeling of being lost. I mean, the LM is there; we can get back to the LM.）、後には―
At this point, in spite of personal frustration - and I know Al felt frustrated in the same way - to have us stop at that point and turn around and come back was the proper decision. （Apollo 14 Technical Crew Debriefing 17 February 1971）
と、引き返したのは妥当な決断だったと述べている。
