Punch a hole in the sky！
と発破をかけられた（←使われている）のを受けてのこと。
スクリプトでは X-1の "Glamorous Glennis" に気付いたグレニスが What’re you doing ? (pleased as punch) （イェーガーは X-1 なんて呼ぶよりいいんじゃね？ I kinda like the sound of it. Bettern callin it “X-1”, ain’t it ?）と盛り上がる。（←使われてない）

原作には punch a hole in the sky のままの言い回しは見当たらないが、似た表現の punch a hole in the desert（砂漠に穴をあける）があり、それをシャレてパロディにしたか。

冒頭 X-1 は墜落してモハベ砂漠に穴をあける―即ち punch a hole in the desert して （パンチョが言う You have to die をクリアし）晴れて pictures on a wall にアップされる。
その葬儀に参列していたグレニスはイェーガーに穴をあけるのは砂漠（in the desert）じゃなく 空―即ち punch a hole in the sky と告げる。
だからこそ、イェーガーは―

Glamorous Glennis で砂漠に穴をあけたりしない（死なない）、すぐ戻って来ると正しく応えるのである。
イェーガーの I punched a hole in the sky…with your name on it. を使っていれば（あれこれ）ピースが嵌って合点のいく笑える流れだったでしょうに。
