その1997～2002
リバティベルのサイドハッチ問題
リバティベルがスプラッシュダウンした際、ガス・グリソムはパニックに陥り焦って（リカバリー・ヘリが吊り上げる前に）ハッチを吹っ飛ばしてしまい、カプセル（リバティベル）を海に沈め、自身は危うく溺れ死ぬという（問題の）シーンが「ライトスタッフ」にあるが、一応は原因の特定されない malfunction とされてはいる。
これに関しては散々あれやこれや（たぶん諸兄をうんざりさせるほど）レスしたけれど、まだ書いてないことを―
グリソムはヘリに拾われるのを待ってると（after confirming that he was ready to be picked up, he lay back in his couch and waited.）突然―
"I heard the hatch blow—the noise was a dull thud—and looked up to see blue sky … and water start to spill over the doorsill."
と証言していて、何もしてないのにハッチが勝手に吹っ飛んだ（想像される）原因の一つに当のリカバリー・ヘリ犯人説―即ちヘリが起こす静電気が引き金になった（static electricity generated by the helicopter had fired the hatch cover）なんてのもあるんですよ。
グリソム（Liberty Bell）とリカバリー・ヘリ（Hunt Club 1）の最後の交信―
Liberty Bell : OK, Hunt Club. This is Liberty Bell 7. Are you ready for the pickup ?
Hunt Club 1: This is Hunt Club 1; this is affirmative.
Liberty Bell : OK, latch on, then give me a call and I'll power down and blow the hatch, OK ?
Hunt Club 1: This is Hunt Club 1, roger,will give you a call when we're ready for you to blow.
Liberty Bell: Roger, I've unplugged my suit so I'm kinda warm now so.
Hunt Club 1: 1, Roger.
Liberty Bell: Now - if you tell me to, ah, you're ready for me to blow, I'll have to take my helmet off, power down, and then blow the hatch.
Hunt Club 1: 1, Roger, and when you blow the hatch, the collar will already be down there waiting for you, and we're turning back at this time.
Liberty Bell: Ah, Roger.
※ ヘリからの準備完了の連絡があるまでグリソムは待機して、あくまでヘリの合図の後に blow the hatch する手筈を互いに再確認しているのが明らか―パニックで焦ってハッチを吹っ飛ばしたなんて様子は窺えない
リカバリー・ヘリ（静電気）犯人説は正直言って中学生並みの主張に思えるけども、malfunction が絶対にないとは絶対に言い切れない証左には（少なくとも）なっているでしょうね。
