続・蛇足

 

その1907～1908

 

唐突ですけども、True Grit「トゥルー・グリット」（「勇気ある追跡」）なる西部劇で主人公について―

 

They tell me you are a man with true grit.

 

They told me you had grit and that is why I came to you.

 

I was informed Rooster Cogburn had grit and I hired him out to find the murderer.

 

といったセリフがあり、これは原作（小説）中の―

 

I said, "They tell me you are a man with true grit."

 

They told me you had grit

 

"They say he has grit," said I. "I wanted a man with grit."

 

I was informed Rooster Cogburn had grit and I hired him out to find the murderer.

 

などのクダリを（そのまま）使っている。

 

で、わたしは（おそらく純正ライトスタッフ・ファンなら）感じるのだが、この true grit は right stuff という言葉に置き換えられましょうね。

 

即ち―

 

They tell me you are a man with true grit.　 →

 

They tell me you are a man with the right stuff.

 

というふうに。

 

 

grit の意味は（たぶん、歯を食いしばって～ のイメージで）―

 

brave perseverance　 invincible spirit 　indomitable courage,toughness, or resolution　 fortitude and determination　 firmness of mind or spirit   unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger

 

といったところ。

 

つまり、true grit は（ちょっと弱いが）「真の勇気」と訳しうる。

 

「ライトスタッフ」での 凸凹リクルータ・コンビのやりとり―

 

They think they got the right stuff.

 

What stuff？  Heroism,  bravery？

 

Heroism and bravery are part of it… but,there's more to it.

 

ここで right stuff とは勇気（勇敢さ）を含む、それ以上の何かであることが告げられる。

 

従って、全くの true grit ＝ right stuff ではないにしても、少なくとも true grit は right stuff の要件・要素の一つであるわけです。
