それを裏付けるヘイズの証言があり、実際はスワイガートが司令船（CSM）に習熟・精通していたことを明言して（Jack was very versed on the technical aspects of a command and service module and flying one.）、更に一般論として（自身がバックアップをやった時の経験から）プライム・クルーよりバックアップ・クルーのほうが（つまり、マッティングリーよりスワイガートのほうが）むしろ訓練時間は多いとしている。 （So I think if you looked at the records, you would see a backup crew generally might get a few more hours’ training than the prime crew.）
従って、「アポロ 13」におけるスワイガートの（リフトオフ 2 日前の付け焼刃的な）シミュレータ訓練のシーンで、まことに覚束ない腕前（司令船操縦技術のなさ）をさらしてしまい、周囲を不安にさせるなんてことは実際にあろうはずのない（スワイガートに甚だ失礼な）脚色で、トム・ハンクス（ジム・ラヴェル役）がマッティングリーの代わりにスワイガートをと言われた時の反応（吹き替え）―
「ジャックは何週間も訓練から離れてる」 （Jack Swigert has been out of the loop for weeks.）
「優秀なパイロットでもシミュレーション訓練が足らない」 （He's a fine pilot. But when was the last time he was in the simulator？）
と、スワイガートのシミュレータ訓練不足を理由に強く反発するのも当然ウソ八百。 （ヘイズによれば、もともと CMP はバックアップと単独の互換性があるように訓練されていたそうだし）
ラヴェルは NASA 長官（Thomas O. Paine）に―
"（I said） in that case we'll be happy to accept Jack Swigert, the backup CMP, a good man."
と応えたのが本当らしい。

ただし、訓練不足に関してだけはジム・ラヴェルは確かにセリフと同じように（ヘイズに反して）自分たちがシミュレータを独り占めしてたからと証言しているが、それでもスワイガートは “very, very competent” であり、代わるならスワイガートしかありえないと強調し映画のウソ（just for interest）を指摘している―

Jack was a very competent astronaut and I think the movie … I guess they showed his personal side just for interest.
He didn’t train for about two months before launch, really, because most of the simulators and other things were hogged by the primary crew.
So he felt like he had to earn his wings every day, but in reality he was very, very competent and also he was one of the people that developed the malfunction procedures for the command module.
Consequently, if I had to replace Ken Mattingly with anybody, it would have been Jack Swigert.
