アラン・シェパードについては何と言ってもマーキュリー唯一のムーン・ウォーカー（アポロ14）であるからして、「人類、月に立つ」でも（「ライトスタッフ」を引き継ぐかのように）当然フォーカスされる。

There is a sequence in the episode that I directed, which is why I directed the episode, which was the first bona fide idea I had about the series, which was we're going to see all of Alan Shepard's Freedom 7 flight, the very first American to fly into space, completely forgotten, completely washed away in the shadow of John Glenn. Fifteen minutes and twenty-two seconds. We just show it. He goes up and he comes down. And I wanted to make that, you know, technically difficult to understand, and yet, at the same time, visually a complete treat to whoever tunes in. And I have to say, pound for pound, that's my favorite sequence.

※ ジョン・グレンが「人類、月に立つ」に一度も登場しないのは映画「ライトスタッフ」とだぶらないようにとの配慮―なんぞと見る向きもあるが、何はともあれトム・ハンクスの念頭にあった（the first bona fide idea）のは Alan Shepard's Freedom 7 （を We just show it.）なのであって、この際 ジョン・グレンは全然お呼びでないゆえのことでしょう。（アラン・シェパードだって「ライトスタッフ」ともろだぶってるんだし）
「人類、月に立つ」はアポロの月ミッションを描くわけだから、最初の軌道飛行ではあっても（必ずしも地球周回軌道が月ミッションに不可欠ではないし） 3 番目の a manned space flight にすぎないフレンドシップ７のジョン・グレンなんか（They think every astronaut is John Glenn. だろうと、以後は宇宙開発の軌道から外れてしまうので）スキップして構わないが、トム・ハンクスの志向（嗜好）がどうこう限らず、フリーダム７のアラン・シェパードは絶対にスルーできない―と言うか、マーキュリー７のなかで唯一人（苦節 10 年を経て、ついに）月に降り立ったシェパードを一つの軸に使わない手はない。（Ep. 9 は "For Miles And Miles" 「不屈のカムバック A・シェパードとアポロ14号」）
フリーダム７は 1961年 5月 5日、そして早くも 5月25日にケネディが議会で月に行くよ～ん演説をする―
First, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth.
つまり、月ミッションは初めにフリーダム７ありき―全てはアラン・シェパードから始まっているのである。
