と、高心拍数は必ずしもパニック状態を意味しないにしても、低心拍数はパニック状態ではないことを意味する（よって、カーペンターはパニックにはなっていない）と解説しているが、ならばガス・グリソムの高心拍数（Just before re-entry his heart rate had reached 171 beats per minute. Even after Grissom was safe and sound on the carrier Lake Champlain, his heart rate was 160 beats a minute）を根拠に絵にかいたようなパニック状態とするのは筋が通らない（フェアじゃない）だろう―加えて、もともとグリソムの心拍数は普段から異常に高いことが（選考過程で）分かっていたのにである。

マーキュリーのデータ表（Pulse Rates）によれば MA-7 ゴードン・クーパーの再突入時心拍数は 184 で MR-4 ガス・グリソムの 171 より高い―けれど、それをもってクーパーがパニクってたなんて誰も（むろんトム・ウルフも）主張しはしない。
どころか、その時のクーパーをトム・ウルフはこう記している―
起こりうるいかなる形の有人飛行に出会っても、ゴードーは全く泰然自若を絵にかいたようだった。（Confronted with any feasible form of manned flight, Gordo was a picture of righteous aplomb.）
原作「ザ・ライト・スタッフ」 Chapter 13: The Operational Stuff （「十三 オペレーショナル・スタッフ」）
ここでトム・ウルフはスコット・カーペンターの心拍数 Carpenter's pulse rate 云々を論じるのであるが、オペレーショナル・スタッフの意味は―
スレイトンにとって、「機能的（オペレーショナル）」は神聖な言葉だった。オペレーショナルとは行動、本物、操縦、ザ・ライト・スタッフを指していた。[中公文庫]（This word, operational, was a holy word to Slayton. He was the King of Operational. Operational referred to action, the real thing, piloting, the right stuff.）
簡単に言うと、the operational stuff ＝the right operational stuff＝the right stuff てな感じですか、このコンセプトからトム・ウルフはカーペンターの失敗（オーロラ７）を教訓（？）にオペレーショナルに意義付けされたウォーリー・シラーのミッション（シグマ７）―
シラーの飛行目的は、カーペンターの飛行が無駄であったことを証明することにあった（For the purpose of Schirra's flight was to prove that Carpenter's need not have happened.）
としている。
