ライフ誌のヘンリー・ルースがマーキュリー７夫妻に破格（500,000ドル）の契約を表明する（These stories will appear in Life、under their own by-lines. For example... by Betty Grissom or by Virgil I. Grissom. ―その3063参照）のをガス・グリソムが遮って―
Gus だ 誰も Virgil なんて呼ばない（Gus. Nobody calls me by that other name.）
と抗議するが、その後でトゥルーディはアニーに―
大金を貰えるんだから Virgil で文句ないけど、わたしなら （I bet for all that money they could call you Virgil. They sure could me.）
と軽く笑いかける。
すると、アニーは呆れて何も言わずに見下すような態度をとってジョン・グレンに連れられ去り、トゥルーディが―
何よ、あれ？ お高くとまって （Well, what's with her? She seems snobby. I don't get it.）
それを受けて、クーパーが（トゥルーディにじゃなく、傍のアラン・シェパードに）答えるオチ―
ミスター・クリーンマリーン令夫人なのさ （I get it. She's "Mrs. Clean Marine." ―その3194参照）

すぐに続くグレンとアニーの会話シーンで実はアニーが酷い吃音ゆえのトゥルーディに対する反応だったと知らされるわけだけれど、スクリプトでは先に（その前に）ヘンリー・ルースによって事情が明かされる流れ（CUT TO: INT GLENN BEDROOM. NIGHT シーンはずっと後に置かれる）―

Well, the poop on her is that she’s protecting something...
A ferocious...jackhammer...stutter...the kind where she gets hung up on almost every syllable... and
Luce’s brow darkens. The Reporter wants to run for cover.
LUCE
I don’t care what she’s got! We’re in a war here, a battle for the heavens, and there’ll be no stutterer on the homefront in my magazine. In a matter of such national importance we will see to it that the Proper Emotion and Fitting Moral Tone prevails.

And it didn't have to be that personal for them to wave the wand and make it disappear. Look at what they did with John Glenn's wife, Annie. Annie was a good-looking and highly capable woman, but she also had what was referred to as a "slight speech impediment" or "a hesitation in her speech." The truth was that she had a terrific stutter, the classic kind, the kind in which you get hung up on a syllable until you either force it out or run out of breath. Annie was game about it, and she would hang in there until she said what she wanted to say, but it was a real disability—everywhere except in Life magazine. In Life magazine there were going to be no ferocious stammering jackhammer stutters on the home front. （The Right Stuff）
しかもそれほどひどく個人的なことでなくても、『ライフ』の記者は魔法の杖を一振りして、消してしまった。たとえば、ジョン・グレンの妻アニーの場合に彼らがどうしたか見てみると分る。アニーは器量もいいし、非常に有能な女性だったが、彼女はまた、「かすかな言語障害」あるいは「とまどいがちな話し方」と言われているものがあった。その実、アニーのつっかえ方は尋常一様ではなく、音節に引っかかると、それを無理やり外に吐き出しでもしない限り息が詰ってしまうほどひどいものだった。アニー自身はそんなことにはお構いなしに、言いたいと思っていることを言うまで、あくまでも頑張ったが、その実は、お話にも何にもなったものではない―『ライフ』誌以外のどんなところでもそうだった。しかし『ライフ』誌上では、戦士を支える銃後にあって、すさまじい鑿岩機のようなつっかえ方などありようがなかった。[中公文庫]
ここでもカウフマンは原作を律儀に反映かつ咀嚼して、実に分かりやすく筋の通ったスクリプトを書いていながら、あっさり削ってしまってるんですよ、最終形態の完全体では。
