【誰にともなしに、独り言レス―その3241】

一般にジェネシス・ロックはジム・アーウィンが（神の啓示を受けて）見つけたことになってるけども、確かに角礫岩の台座（pedestal）の上に（まるで、誰かがこれ見よがしに置いたかのように）あったその特徴的な石は先にアーウィンの目にとまったらしいが、二人一緒に船外活動してるんだから（どちらが先などと決めずとも）二人で見つけて採取したでいいんじゃ？（後にスコットは "And it was a small fragment sitting on top of a dark brown larger fragment, almost like on a pedestal. And Jim and I were quite impressed with the fact that it was there, apparently waiting for us." と語ってもいる）
その模様を（ほぼ）忠実に再現している（と思われる）「人類、月に立つ」では、むしろデイヴ・スコットが見つけたような感じで、これはスコットが話の主役に据えられているせいもあるにせよ、記録を見る限りは事実そんな印象を受ける。 （スコットが石をレーキで拾い上げ "Guess what we just found. I think we found what we came for." とアレンに交信―"I think we found what we came for." はアーウィンの発言ともされる）

スコットとアーウィン（とバックアップのゴードンとシュミット）は地質学者のシルバー教授から野外レクチャーを受け、月で採取すべきものは（何をさておいても）斜長岩 anorthosite だと教えられていた―これを見つけたわけです。
で、話は殆んど専らスコットとシルバー教授の交流（心のふれあい）に的が絞られているので、俄かに神がかったアーウィンについては、もともと（月に行く前）の俗人ぶりをさりげなく匂わすに止め（言うなれば）さわらぬ神に祟りなし？ といった描き方―と、わたしには思える。
もっとも、冒頭で トム・ハンクスが「この世の隅々にまで神が存在するとしたら、遥か月にまで旅立っても追い求めねばならない」If God is found in the details of our world then the details must be discovered and interpreted by the men who make the voyage from the Earth to the moon. などと（アンドルー・チェイキンの言い回しのまま）妙に捻ったネタばれをしてるけど。

できたてホヤホヤの月はマグマに覆われていて（magma ocean）、次第にマグマより軽い結晶した斜長石（plagioclase）が浮き上がり集まって固まる―これが斜長岩（anorthosite）で、その特徴は結晶質で白い。 （白っぽく見える月の高地は斜長岩、黒っぽく見える低地の海は玄武岩から成る）
月の石なら何でもヤミクモに持ち帰るんじゃなく（←海に着陸したアポロ11、12 が採取したのはその辺の玄武岩、ゴルフしに行ったアポロ14 はバンカーの砂―てのは冗談）、月の起源を解明する鍵になると期待される斜長岩（←原始の地殻の一部だから）をこそ見つけるようシルバー教授は説いていた。 （そのためにアポロ15 は敢えて危険なハドリー・アペニン Hadley- Appenine を着陸地点に選んだ由）
スコットは（後に Genesis Rock と名付けられる）その白く輝くサンプルを手にし（凡庸な玄武岩や角礫岩とは全く違い） it’s crystalline で it’s just almost all plagioclase だから目当ての anorthosite だと間違いのない鑑定報告をする―まさにシルバー教授のレクチャー（15ヶ月に及ぶ野外地質学の訓練）の賜物でありましょう。
