スコット・カーペンターの証言―

Carpenter: We were left out of that decision-making. The way it happened was Bob Gilruth selected three guys for the first two flights, I think. Al was to get – when we all learned this, Al got the first flight, Gus got the second flight, and John, I think, was to be backup for both of them. That's all we knew. The other four of us, Deke, Wally, Gordo, and I were sort of odd men out. I think that was not handled quite right, but it is unimportant. And they flew. And then John got the first orbital flight, and, of course, everybody was disappointed that they didn't get the first flight. And Al, of course, was very pleased that he got the first flight. He had reason to be, but it turned out that -and we didn't even know that we would make only two ballistic flights and then go into orbital flight. So it turned out that the fellow who got the third flight really had the most heroic mission of them all.
カーペンターは自分達の与り知らぬところでギルルースが 1 番目と 2 番目のフライトにシェパード、グリソム、グレンを選び、最初がシェパード、次にグリソム、それぞれのバックアップにグレンを指定して、残りのスレイトン、シラー、クーパー、カーペンターは落ちこぼれ（ちなみに、原作の表現では「その他 四人はどうかと言えば、地球の割れ目から滑り落ちてしまったも同然だった」 As for the Other Four, they might as well have dropped through a crack in the earth.）、当然 1 番目になるべくしてなったシェパードは大喜びしたが、結局は the most heroic mission である（最初の軌道飛行の）3 番目をグレンが飛んだ―という顚末（オチ）を概略的に語る。
この（すんなり受け入れたわけでは全然なさげな）口ぶりから想像するに、ギルルースの意向・裁定は（伝えられるほど）互選の結果に左右されたものではなく、少なくとも互選によって決定されたのではないことが窺える―
わたしにはギルルースの狡猾なアリバイ作り、ガス抜きを兼ねた懐柔策のようにも感じられますね。
互選 関連レス―

え～ところで、しらばくれておりましたが、わたくし（レッドバロンのフォッカー Dr.1よりも）真っ赤なウソをついておりました。
＞その互選とやらが具体的にどういう形式だったのか解りませんので
などと（いけしゃーしゃー）申しましたが、本当のところは先刻承知の上のワルフザケが過ぎたかも。
真に受けて、マジメに聴講していたかもしれない諸兄のために、一応ちゃんと解説しときましょう↓
1961年 1月19日（ケネディ大統領就任前日）、ロバート・ギルラスは、重要な話があると言って、７人を呼び集めてます。
そしてギルラスは（ほんとは 1 番目を誰にするか心積もりがあったのに？）選考の手助けをしてくれと peer vote （互選）を要請―
「もし自分が行けないとしたら、最初に飛ばすのに誰を選ぶか」を投票するように、と。（“I want you guys to take a peer vote – if you couldn't make the first flight, select the man you think should go. Write your choice on a piece of paper and drop it by my office.”）
つまり、７人全員が自分以外の誰かに入れるというスタイル―となると無記名とかじゃないか、インチキできるから。
ギルラスのオフィスに投げ入れられたその投票用紙をギルラスだけが見て、皆に発表したらしい―例の seances （交霊会）に使われてた部屋で。
１ 番目の名前が呼ばれた時の、他の 6 人の複雑な心境を考えると（遠い親戚の純正ライトスタッフ・ファンとしては）何だか辛いような、厭らしいような…（してやったりのアラン・シェパードいわく―皆が握手をしてくれはしたが、気が付くと独りぽっちで部屋に取り残されてたよ）
