ビル・アンダースは Astronaut Group 3 ―30 才の誕生日にディーク・スレイトンから‘How would you like to come work for us?' と（電話で）バースデープレゼントを貰ったそうで、この Group 3 から宇宙飛行士は（fighter jet pilot experience がありさえすれば）テストパイロットの資格を問われなくなり、have an advanced degree でオッケーとなった。（アンダースはテストパイロットではなかったが修士の学位を持っていた）

 

この条件変更の影響が大きい。

Apparently, Yeager was upset following the 1963 NASA selection of USAF pilots who did not hold a test pilot qualification (including Edwin E. 'Buzz' Aldrin and William A. Anders) and had insisted that all future USAF astronauts should at least be graduates of ARPS. Yeager had been in contact with Buck Buchanan who was a graduate of the first ARPS Class and worked at the Pentagon in Washington, and had discussed this requirement. In early 1964, they took it upon themselves to decree that any astronauts chosen for MOL (or any other USAF manned space program for that matter) would be drawn exclusively from the ARPS program.

 

空軍（MOL）の宇宙飛行士は ARPS 卒に限る―そうイェーガーは断乎として決めたのである。

 

これ（ここがポイントなんですよ）を踏まえて、ビル・アンダースの興味深い説明（Bill Anders : A Love Of  Afterburners　Airport Journals）を―

 

その 3 日後、イェーガーは以前からテストパイロット・スクール入りを申請していたアンダースに―

 

‘I’m sorry to tell you that you didn’t make it, but you almost did; try again next year.'

 

と今更の（お為ごかしの）返事をしてくる。

 

アンダースが（あ、そっちよりいいとこに引っ張られてますから  ‘Thanks, but I got a better offer.’）―

 

‘I got a call from Deke Slayton to come and join the astronaut school.’

 

と既に スレイトン（NASA）に採用されたことを告げると、イェーガーは（何だと～💢  てな口調で）テストパイロット・スクール卒じゃないものは却下だと宣う―

 

‘I was the head of the Air Force screening committee. I reviewed all of the applications. We threw out any of our Air Force applicants who hadn’t been to the test pilot school.’

 

そして、決定を覆してやると。（‘I’m going to have that decision overturned.’）

 

アンダースはスレイトンに―

 

‘You’re going to get a call from Chuck Yeager; he wants me to get kicked out of the program.’

 

と電話で即、注意しておいたとか。

 

もともとアンダースはテストパイロットになろうとエドワーズに赴いた時にイェーガーから―

 

‘Your flying time is good, but now the Air Force is looking for people with advanced degrees; why don’t you apply to the Air Force Institute of Technology?'

 

と不本意な方向（wrong road）へ撥ねられ、しかしそこで修士 a master’s degree in nuclear engineering（in 1962）になっていたことが逆に結果オーライ（イェーガーには裏目）になった―

 

かくして「ファースト・マン」の主人公がフランク・ボーマンだった場合、イェーガーは当然 ビル・アンダースとも絡んでくるわけです―やはり憎まれ役として。
