2000年 5 月、故アラン・シェパードのブロンズ像の除幕式―しぶとく生き残ってるマーキュリー４／７（即ちグレン、カーペンター、クーパー、シラー）も出席しております。
その像を見上げて娘さんがこう言ったそうです―
If Dady had actually been this tall,he never would have been selected as one of the original astronauts.
トピ主さんの嫌うヤード法で言うと、この像の背丈は６フィート10インチで、実物より１フート（フィート）近くも高いんですね。
そんな大男だったら、マーキュリー７には選ばれなかったと言ってるわけです。
で、彼らの身長についてですけど―
seven criteria なるものがあって（なぜ選考基準が７項目なのか判りませんが）、それをクリアしてないとはねられた７つのクリテリアとは次のとおりです―
1. Be less than 40 years old.
2. Be less than 5 feet 11 inches tall.
3. Be in excellent physical condition.
4. Have a bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent.
5. Be a test-pilot school graduate.
6. Have a minimum of 1,500 hours flying time.
7. Be a qualified jet pilot.
この 2 番目ですね― 5フィート11インチ以下じゃないとダメだったんですよ、身長は。
と言うのも、ご存じのようにカプセルが意外と小さくて７フィートもなかったから。
アラン・シェパードの身長が、まさにこの 5フィート11インチ―いっぱいいっぱいなのでありました。（危ないとこだったのね…）
