チャールズ・バセットがイェーガーに直接しごかれてたのかは詳らかではないけれど、ばりばりのエドワーズ組（ライトスタッフ系）テストパイロットだったのは確かで、Air Force Experimental Pilot School 及び Aerospace Research Pilot School 卒―ARPS では Class III、クラスメートにマイク・コリンズやジョー・エングルらがいる。

During the testing, we heard some terrible news: Charlie Bassett, the astronaut I had helped to train not long before, had died in an airplane crash, along with fellow astronaut Elliot See. I was stunned and could only repeat to myself, “Oh shit, what happened?” I was left with a sense of both amazement and shock that Charlie was gone. He was one of the best, had become an astronaut just like I hoped to do, and now he was dead. He’d been in the back seat of a T-38 jet while Elliot See, an astronaut I didn’tknow, flew the airplane. I had heard that Elliot was more of a stick-and-rudder kind of pilot: instruments were not so much his thing. In atrocious weather conditions, needing to land, he’d tried to circle under some clouds to visually line up with the runway and hit a building.
ウォーデンは「まさか、あの優秀なバセットが―」「よく知らないがシーは計器飛行が得意じゃなかったらしい」といったふうに記してますね。

アル・ウォーデンは（ああ見えて） ARPS 出、どころか ARPS のインストラクター、それもイェーガーに直々に要請されて。
ウォーデンはエドワーズから（テストパイロット・スクールの草分けである） the Empire Test Pilot School （イギリス）に留学していて、卒業する一月前 そこを the U.S. test pilot school （つまり、本籍 エドワーズの）が来訪してきた―イェーガー校長が飛行機を降り、早速ウォーデンを見つけるや「すこぶる優秀ゆえエドワーズで教鞭を執ってもらいたい」旨（"We'd like you to come back to teach at Edwards. We understanding you've done fairly well over here and everything is good, so we'd like you to come back to teach."）告げたんだそうな。
が、あいにく（どういう位置付けか）ウォーデンにはイギリスでの 3 年間の任務（three-year tour of duty）があり、おいそれとは勝手に帰国できない―それを知ったイェーガーは俺に任せておけと安請合いしたものの、とうてい両校長の折衝くらいでは埒があかず、ついに国務長官レベルにまで話は上がり、ようやくウォーデンの引き戻しが叶ったという顛末だった。
ウォーデン教官が ARPS で訓練した宇宙飛行士にはジーン・サーナンやチャールズ・バセットがいたらしい。（当時は空軍だろうと海軍だろうと ARPS に参加して箔を付けた？宇宙飛行士が少なくない―もちろんアポロ15 の空軍トリオも純正 ARPS トリオ）
