The source of the error was later found to be in the astronaut checklist document; instructing the astronaut to place the rendezvous radar hardware switch in the wrong position, thus stealing valuable CPU time. The mechanisms the software used for this emergency were thought by many to have saved the Apollo 11 mission.
と語っているが、そのチェックリスト（astronaut checklist document）は実はオルドリンの考案で、月着陸をアボートした場合に LM をCM と再ドッキングしやすくするため（facilitating re-docking with the CM）ランデブー（ドッキング）レーダーを（本来は着陸態勢に入ってるのだからオフにすべきなのに）敢えて（周到にして綿密に？）オンのままにしておいた（leaving the docking radar on during the landing process）―その全く余計なデータを処理させられてたのでオーバーフローを招いたってことらしい。
そんな経緯を確信犯のランデブー博士 オルドリンは In the Shadow of the Moon で（ありていに）自白していて―
“Being 'Dr. Rendezvous,' no matter what the checklist said, I was going to leave the rendezvous radar on and active so that if we had to abort, it was on and working and we could reacquire height as soon as possible in case we had to go back up.”
