かように漠然とでも（かつリアルに）“The right X-15” を妄想すると明瞭になるのだけれど、X-15 は本来マーキュリー計画（宇宙飛行士）の対立軸に掲げるべきアイテムであって、「ライトスタッフ」（構成上）のようにイェーガー（X-1、X-1A）～ マーキュリー７（宇宙カプセル）の中間項に配して挙句に未使用のままポイ捨てして済ませられるものではない。
が、そのことを「ライトスタッフ」（最終形態）では連絡官 liaison man がイェーガーに漠然と告げるセリフに感じられはする―
The bad news is the entire program's probably going to be scrapped.
From now on, the astronaut boys in Houston have got the only ticket.
原作が示してるのは廃棄されるプログラムとは X-20（Dyna-Soar）のことで、カウフマンはスクリプトでも曖昧に（ごまかして）処理してるが、X-15（X-15B）と X-20 は（互換可能な）同一コンセプトのスペースプレーンとも見れるし、NF-104 にかけた（連絡官の言う）the entire program とは空軍（独自）の宇宙プロジェクトを指すと解釈すべきだろう。
だから、ついにカウフマンは X-15 を使わなかった（使えなかった）―イェーガーは X-15 で飛んでいないのだから。
ま、ヒューストン（宇宙飛行士）の対立軸はエドワーズ（テストパイロット）ってのが plain and simple かつ（原作に律儀な映画として）正しいのだけれど。（その3066、3101～3103参照）
