there were at least two central stories in the book and they truly didn't touch at any point.
この厳然たる二項対立をどうしたものか（how to make it into a movie）、ゴールドマンは（ウィンクラーの示唆に乗って）安直にして大胆にも肝心要のライトスタッフの真髄＝イェーガー（the Yeager material）を捨て去り、マーキュリー 7 だけの話に絞る（go with the astronauts）ことにした。
即ち、ゴールドマン脚本は単に量的に見ても原作の半分（どころか、その更に 3／7）しかカバーしてないわけで、この薄～い（ライトな？）内容で図々しくも「ライトスタッフ」を名乗ってもらっちゃ、なものは看板倒れの紛い物、フェイク映画だと申し上げてるんですよ、わたしは。
ゴールドマンはカウフマンのテストパイロットとしてのイェーガー（air shows ＝ old airplanes ＝ Yeager）を鮮明に際立たせ、一方のマーキュリー 7 は誇大に宣伝広告されたマイナー（二軍）のライトスタッフとしか考えないスタンスに大惨事（悪夢だぁ～）"Kaufman meeting-disaster." と泣き言を日記に認めたとか…
The entry I have in my journal for that day says: "Kaufman meeting-disaster." But in truth, I don't know which of his two remarks proved the more devastating.The one about patriotism seems clearly the more potent. But the one about air shows meant old airplanes, and old airplanes meant one thing to me -Yeager.Phil's heart was with Yeager. And not only that, he felt the astronauts, rather than being heroic, were really minor leaguers, mechanical men of no particular quality, not great pilots at all, simply the product of hype.
ちなみに、原作「ザ・ライト・スタッフ」（[中公文庫]－中央公論社）独自の副題は（ゴールドマンよろしく）「七人の宇宙飛行士」―まぁ、イェーガーをさておき、実際の中身（実態）は最初に登場するメインキャラが（七人の宇宙飛行士＝マーキュリー 7 NASA Astronaut Group 1 の選に漏れ）次の New 9（NASA Astronaut Group 2）となったピート・コンラッドであることからしても（その2920参照）、ざっくりし過ぎで的確とは言えまい。
