【誰にともなしに、独り言レス―その3455】
このメル・アプトの X-2、ジョージ・ウェルチの F-100A（12 October 1954 その3075参照） のようなロール・カプリング（inertial roll coupling）による制御不能・墜落事故は決してレアケースじゃない不可避の致命的トラブル―なのだが、一人イェーガーは違った。
その X-1A アクシデント（12 December 1953）をクロスフィールドは―
“fastest and wildest airplane ride in history”
と評し、あんな窮地を切り抜けられるのはイェーガーだけだ（Probably no other pilot could have come through that experience alive.）と素直に認めている。（Always Another Dawn : The Story of a Rocket Test Pilot）
どうやって立て直したのか（how he regained control of the ship）イェーガーに訊くと、わざとスピンさせた（he had deliberately put the ship into a spin）と（あやふやながら）答えたそうで―
. . . Yeager received many accolades. I didn’t begrudge him one of them. If ever a pilot deserved praise for a job well done, it was Yeager.
人の受ける栄誉を羨んだりしないが、文句なく称賛に値するパイロットがいるとすれば、それはイェーガーだ。（きっぱり）
な～んて、クロスフィールドにしか語れない、他の誰にも語る資格（資質）がないと思われる深～い話を明かしてくれております。
註） イェーガーは 1985 NPR interview で 別に大したことじゃない（no big deal）―
“Well, sure, because I’d spun airplanes all my life and that’s exactly what I did. I recovered the X-1A from inverted spin into a normal spin, popped it out of that and came on back and landed. That’s what you’re taught to do.”
フツーのスピンに戻してやりゃ立て直せるよと（あんたはフィギュアスケーターか？）余裕かましてレクチャーしている。
