は一切 B-52（mothership）に触れてない文脈である以上、やはり（素直に真に受ける一般の読者にとっては）＞致命的な間違い ―ごく控えめに言っても、舌足らずすぎでしょう。
X-1 の場合は―
At 26,000 feet the B-29 went into a shallow dive, then pulled up and released Yeager and the X-1 as if it were a bomb. Like a bomb it dropped and shot forward (at the speed of the mother ship) at the same time. Yeager had been launched straight into the sun.

と B-29（＝ the mother ship）に懇切丁寧なのに。
トム・ウルフは X-1 と B-29 の（母子？）関係を重々説明してるせいか、X-15 と B-52 についても（無意識に）自明の前提にしてるのかもしれんが、およそ X-15 の launch に関する記述は―
The preliminary design section of North American Aviation had working drawings and most of the specifications for a fifteen-ton ship called the X-15B, a winged craft that would be launched by three enormous rockets, each with 415,000 pounds of thrust, whereupon the ship's two pilots would take over with the X-15B's own 75,000-pound engine, make three or more orbits of the earth, reenter the atmosphere, and land on a dry lake bed at Edwards like any other pilots in the X series.
ノース・アメリカン航空の予備設計部門では、X 15 B と銘打った十五トンの機の製作図ができあがり、仕様もほとんど決まっていた。X 15 B は有翼機であり、推力四十一万五千ポンドという巨大なロケット三基によって打ち上げられ、そのあと二人のパイロットが X 15 B 自体の七万五千ポンドのエンジンに切り替えて地球の軌道を三回ないしそれ以上まわり、大気圏内に再突入し、X シリーズの他のパイロットがやるのと同様に、エドワーズ基地の干上った湖底に着陸させるという計画だった。[中公文庫]
なんて（B-52 から空中発射するレギュラーの X-15 とは別の）マジでロケット（Navaho booster rockets）で打ち上げるカプセル的な（かつ乗ってるだけじゃダメな、パイロットが操縦しなければならない）スペースプレーン（orbital version）の X-15B のことしか書いてないんですよ、どういうつもりか（誤解を助長させたいのか？）
