It's still pretty good. These days, I go between 20/15 and 20/20, and obviously I don't wear glasses for reading or anything like that. I’m lucky because it's primarily hereditary. I remember my mom lived to be around 90 years old, and she'd still pick up a newspaper and read it without glasses.

Would you say your eyesight is what made you such a good hunter and a great dogfighter?

Yes, because during World War II there was no radar. To pick up the enemies back then, everything depended on your eyesight and visual acuity. When I was flying I could spot the enemy from 25 or 30 miles away. That's a lot farther than the other guys could see, so it made it easy to maneuver my squadron. I'd angle my squadron so we'd come in out of the sun, and the enemies wouldn't see us until we were on top of them.

The Red Baron(2008)

"But always remember-

Our task is to bring down aeroplanes, not men. So stop firing when your opponent's falling.

Gentlemen, we are sportsmen. Not butchers.

のもとネタと思われる Der rote Kampfflieger(von Rittmeister Manfred Freiherrn von Richthofen)の一節―

英訳

My father discriminates between a sportsman and a butcher. The latter shoots for fun. When I have shot down an Englishman my hunting passion is satisfied for a quarter of an hour. Therefore I do not succeed in shooting two Englishmen in succession. If one of them comes down I have the feeling of complete satisfaction. Only much, much later I have overcome my instinct and have become a butcher.

Jäger = sportsman

"We are sportsmen, not butchers."(Wir sind Sportsmänner, keine Schlächter.

sportsman = hunter

But the best part, is the chase! The fights... The hunt! It's like a match.  A joust, just like sports.

Tennis does not kill you.

I was always afraid of dying.

I feel terrible after every air battle, probably an after-effect of my head wound. When I again set foot on the ground I withdraw to my quarters and don't want to see anybody or hear anything. I think of the war as it really is, not "with a hurrah and a roar" as the people at home imagine it; it is much more serious, bitter. (原文不詳)(Mother of Eagles: War Diary of Baroness von Richthofen)
